Our Parish History

Christ the Saviour has an interesting past in that it has been part of 3 denominations before turning to orthodoxy.

Our original parish was started out as  part of the Episcopalian Diocese of Upper South Carolina until some of it's members broke away in response to dogmatic issues.  The members joined the Anglican Church in 1992.

The parish council voted to leave the Anglican church in 1995 and become part of the Antiochian Archdiocese of North America. Our parish would worship in the Western Rite.  This liturgical form of worship is based upon the Book of Common Prayer but with some editing as to reflect the teachings of Orthodox Christianity. This transition brought with it a certain amount of anxiety which resulted in a fluctuation of parish membership.

Fr. Cassian Dunlap was assigned as our first orthodox pastor.  Fr. Dunlap helped guide the parish in its journey within Orthodoxy.  Fr. Dunlap remained as pastor until he and Fr. David Randolph exchanged parishes in 1999.

The arrival of Fr. Randolph brought about even more changes: The Parish Council voted in 2001 to worship in the Byzantine Rite.

Under the pastorship of Fr. Randolph the parish began to experience growth.  The parish low of 15 has been increased to 70 plus catechumens.  The parish has become part of Angel Food Ministries.

The Parish recently purchased a vacant office on North Fant Street near Anderson Area Medical Center.  The building effectively doubles the worship space plus provides for offices, 2 classrooms, and a social area.  Being in the "heart" of Anderson brings about the opportunity to reach out to the community in new ways.
